Infrared Gas Analyzers

Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) analysis measures gases that absorb infrared light at characteristic wavelengths — a list that includes most of the industrial headline gases: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. The sample is not consumed and there is no flame or carrier gas, which is why NDIR anchors so many online installations.

The detailed instrument here is the MIC300-F08: an online analyzer with published accuracy within ±2% of full scale, T90 inside 30 seconds and multi-year service life, in a 4 kg enclosure that fits shelters and racks.

Where NDIR wins

Choose NDIR for continuous duty on infrared-active gases at percent and high-ppm levels: biogas composition, syngas streams, process CO2, emissions CO and methane slip. The dual benefits are selectivity — the wavelength is the gas's fingerprint — and stability over long unattended runs.

Its limits are equally physical: gases without infrared absorption (hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine) need other principles, and heavy cross-sensitivity in wet, dirty streams argues for sample conditioning. The analyzer category page compares principles side by side.

NDIR sensing at point level

The same physics scales down: NDIR sensors appear inside the MIC100 fixed multi-gas detector and the portable platforms for carbon dioxide and combustible measurement, where freedom from poisoning and long life outweigh the last increment of sensitivity. Specifying 'an NDIR analyzer' should therefore start with the duty — rack instrument or point sensor — rather than the badge.
